Service Description
This is a certificate of excellence for those candidates who wish to train to become an active crew member on a power or sailing yacht. It includes Introduction to Boating for power and sail yachts. Recommended Entry Level Requirements - At least 16 years of age Certificate Limitations - Crew on a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 metres - In coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore - In daylight hours and in fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions It is the level of competence that someone needs either when acting as watchkeeping crew on a yacht and as a skipper of a small yacht in protected waters where help is immediately available in calm conditions. Course Outline - Nautical terminology - Safety briefing - Passage planning - Rope work - Basic rules of the road - Introduction to weather - Basic sail handling - Basic handling under power - Man overboard procedures - Vessel equipment and instruments - Engine checks and maintenance - Deck seamanship - Sailing vessels handling skills - Sailing vessels under power - Power vessel handling skills - Dingy handling under power Other Information E-learning Theory Available Students have the option to complete the E-learning theory component of this course online and pay the corresponding exam fee. Upon successful completion of the online theory exam, a course completion certificate will be issued and made available on the student’s IYT account. Students must then forward a copy of their theory completion certificate to an IYT-approved partner school to undertake the required practical training and assessments. The partner school is responsible for retaining a copy of the theory completion certificate, completing and signing off on the practical assessment, and, upon successful fulfillment of all requirements, submitting an order to IYT for the final course certificate. *Schools may administer an additional short quiz or theory test at the beginning of the course to help identify any gaps in the student’s theoretical knowledge. A competent crew member can fill any role at least temporarily. No one can sail better alone than with a competent crew. We all want to be useful aboard. No one likes feeling “in the way” This course is designed to give you the foundational skills to be useful at all times onboard. International crew is a pre requisite for higher level courses such as Bareboat Skipper. If you are going sailing this course is for you.
